Activities...

Week 2 - With Artist Sam Sherriff

Monday 14 - A Garden of Art

Today we will be making animals, people, and illustrations using foraged items from the garden, which we will explore and collect together for our art and sensory play. Creating patterns, mandalas, symmetrical works of art with leaves and other found foliage. We will be using a mixed media approach, printing with leaves, paint, pens, and taking paper rubbings.

Playing with the leaves we will delight our senses; Exploring cutting the leaves into new shapes, feeling the different textures and describing these on paper.

Tuesday 15 - Busy Bees

A day of construction and printing from the things we build. We will be getting busy with a focus on the importance and natural beauty of bees. We will be discussing pollination, hives patterns and looking at the contrasting colours before making our own bee hives and bees using upcycled materials and plants. Using card to create hive patterns, we will experiment with printing and collaging bee homes and the places they love to be.

Wednesday 16 - What Autumn Brings

Thinking about what lives in the grounds, we will start by creating beautiful but also practical frozen bird feeders for the Forgan Arts garden. Collecting conkers, we will use these to create a fun game for pattern printing using boxes, trays, paint, conkers and a variety of papers which we will go on to use for collage, drawing, and painting to mix with the original natural effects to create a finished artwork. Looking at what we have in the gardens to decorate Autumnal sensory boards for play, we will experiment with photographing the changing images we can create with the boards. Hunting for hedgehog signs, we will use some of the foraged finds from the garden to make our very own little hedgehogs.

Thursday 17 - Growing Trees

Today we will be using the beauty and simplicity of trees for sensory play, drawing, craft and collaborative construction!

After a walk around the garden to find the different trees, barks and leave that interest us, we will dive into some books to look at tree and leaf varieties for inspiration so that we can begin to build and make our own collaborative trees.

Examining our leaves and shapes from the garden, we will hang these to look at the shadows they create, using art materials to trace the shapes and patterns and collect some mark making samples and pencil and ink studies of leaves.

Friday 18 - Creatures in the Woods

What creatures will be hiding in our grounds? Looking at books on animal habitats as inspiration and reference, today we will be creating hedgehogs, spiders and other creatures using pinecones as the starting material. Focusing on woodland creatures for our crafts, we will play with mark making and tactile dough printing before creating our own little Snails and Fox heads with clay and a variety of recycled materials.
