Activities...

Week 1 with Artsists Rosie Roberts

Monday 7- I was here- stencils and our selves

Today we will explore the world of stencils, how to make them, their history and how they are used. Looking at the work of ancient peoples such as hand stencils, made by blowing pigment over a hand held against a wall, are found from over 35,000 years ago in Asia and Europe, and later prehistoric dates in other continents the arts and crafts movement as well as social movements such as in Paris during May 1968. We will be making our own stencils and then using child safe spray paints to decorate a variety of surfaces.

Tuesday 8 - It takes a village to make a village

Today we will be making all of the things we think are necessary for a thriving society, building them out of recycling and cardboard. The session is inspired by various contemporary feminist thinkers and artists works regarding how care and domestic labour can be taken into account when making municipal decisions. We will be painting and decorating a town, village or city adding what we would love to have and taking away what we don’t want. We will bring all of our buildings and amenities together to plan our town and create a communal artwork which includes each child's offering which they can then take home themselves.

Wednesday 9 - Pots, Cups and Bowls

The history of clay pots, or pottery, is one of the oldest human inventions, with evidence of pottery dating back to 29,000 BC! Today we will explore the vessels which define domestic life, their history and how they have been made and used. Influenced by the ancient craft of pottery itself alongside the 19th century Arts and Crafts movement and the 20th century German Bauhaus movement, pottery styles in Scotland were developed. Using clay and slab building or coil methods we will plan, draw and then make our own vessels. We will focus on form, assemblage, and the sensation of making something useful. We will also look at how ceramics are used by contemporary artists such as Kara Walker and Greyson Perry to challenge societal norms and notions.

Thursday 10 - Collaging our Dreamscapes

By the end of our lives, it is estimated that most of us will have spent 50,000 hours dreaming. That is six years spent amongst the night-time imaginings which can delight and perplex us. Formed in our minds and yet alien to them, the dream's enduring mysteries have long captivated artists and writers. Today we will be making both individual and a group artwork out of collage materials. Taking both dreams we have for the future and the dream world we experience when we sleep we will create unreal landscapes that reflect our real life hopes and thoughts. We will look at what dreams have meant for different artists in history such as Leonora Carrington and Hieronymus Bosch

Friday 11 - Mixed Art Activties

Friday will be a day of celebrating the week and expressing ourselves creatively through imaginative art play.
