Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, Storytelling
Join Artist Fiona Burrows for a week of drawing, painting and printing art activities inspired by the natural world, plants and flowers. Ideally part of each day will be spent outside in nature (Scottish weather dependent!). Using drawing as a foundation, both observation and imagination skills will be developed through a range of techniques. This may raise questions around ‘accurate’ or ‘interesting’ mark-making.
Our sketches/photos and reference imagery will be developed through painting, print processes, collage and more across the week. We will discuss a variety of artist’s work for inspiration, including work by William Morris, Georgia O’Keefe, Elizabeth Blackadder, Van Gogh, Florence Hutchings and Clare Woods. Children will come away from the week having experience of techniques they can use to make images and a confidence in experimenting.
Artist Inspiration: William Morris, Georgia O’Keefe, Benjamin Murphy, Florence Hutchings, Clare Woods, Elizabeth Blackadder, Yayoi Kusama
MONDAY 11 JULY
Drawing: Sketching Skills and Monoprinting
Today we will develop our drawing skills, using different methods to record the natural world. We’ll complete sketching challenges, learn how to monoprint with ink and try our hand at frottage!
TUESDAY 12 JULY
Big Painting Day
Today is all about paint – we will learn about mixing colours and build confidence in accurately recording what we see, then we’ll get expressive and experiment with mark making - collaborating to make large scale paintings inspired by the abstract expressionists.
WEDNESDAY 13 JULY
Storytelling and imagination in Art – introducing animals + humans
A picture speaks a thousand words and today we’ll investigate the link between narrative storytelling and art, through acting, imaginative drawing and collage.
THURSDAY 14 JULY
Collage
Let’s see what we can create in collage! We will make interesting, coloured papers, practice our observational drawing skills and then get creative with paper, inspired by our drawings and the work of modern collage artists – both figurative and abstract.
FRIDAY 15 JULY
William Morris Relief Printmaking
After finding out a little about William Morris and his work we will draw designs inspired by him and then create a relief print block and use this to make a printed image.
This Summer, we have visiting artists coming in to teach the children. They will deliver a range of activities through the week under their chosen theme and be supported by 2 children's playworkers.
